Debut Authors in-conversation with Michael Thompson

We’re inviting Cassie Stroud, author of Iluka; Katie Hoskins, author of, When the party's over; and Sophie Stern, author of, What is left for us to the stage to discuss their works. They will discuss some of the crossover themes in their books, such as female friendship, motherhood and secrets – all set in Sydney.

The authors will also share their journey as debut writers and talk about getting published, the realities of the debut year, writing commercial fiction, and the path from manuscript to bookshelf.

Author bios:

Cassie Stroud is a writer, editor and fiction scout. She has worked as a bookseller at Brays Books, WellRead and Collins Booksellers. She has a BComm in Creative Writing, has completed writing mentorships with Kirsten Tranter and Emily Maguire, and the ‘Inside Story’ course with Tessa Hadley, via the Curtis Brown Institute.

Katie Hoskins is a communications professional with a lifelong love of books. Originally from the south coast of England, she started her career in London, then travelled to Sydney in 2007 to study journalism. Katie loves exploring and writing about friendship and family dynamics in women’s lives. As one of six siblings, and 30 first cousins, she’s never short of inspiration.

Sophie Stern is a Sydney-based writer, where she lives with her husband and son. The manuscript of her first novel was shortlisted for the Penguin Literary Prize in 2024. Her short fiction has been shortlisted for the Bridport Prize, and published in Yen Magazine and Ellipsis Zine. She completed residencies with Varuna, The National Writers' House, in 2023 and 2024.

Michael Thompson has been a journalist, producer and media executive. He now co-owns a podcast production company called Fear and Greed – home of Australia’s most popular business podcast. He lives in Sydney with his wife, two children, a black and white cat, an extremely friendly dog, and his beloved lawn.
